Talking about rape in class the other day really got me thinking. Women are strong, we have every reason to live in fear however we do not. Does anyone ever realize why women never go anywhere alone, for example women always go to the bathroom together. I also read that men purposely invite women to parties to result in sex. Often women are drugged and in a sexual environment in order for men to have sex with them. According to the U.S Department of Justice, somewhere in America a woman is raped every two minutes(National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1996.) Just some rape statistics for everyone to think about. 31% of female victims reported that the offender was a stranger and 68% of rapes occur between the hours of 6pm. and 6am. About half of all rape victims are in the lowest third of income distribution; half are in the upper two-thirds( Violence against Women, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Dept. of Justice 1994). I have chosen to upload this video because it is a well known video, and this is a true story. Although there have been comedic remakes, this is a serious issue that is still going on today. Women are seen as weak and that is why we are targeted as rape victims. How do you all feel about rape? Do you think women are targeted because women are weak or because women are "said to be" a sexual distraction/tease for men?

I believe these statistics show little of what a man's perspective really is. Once statistics like these come out to the public people assume that's the only reason why men invite other girls. Rape is a horrendous thing to occur to anybody and the person who is accused of such act should suffer more jail time than a murder.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that in many cases rape is done in order for someone to assert their authority over someone else. Of course in the eyes of many men women are viewed as the "weaker" gender due simply to society's continuous reminder that it is the man that should provide and that in many peoples' minds, the woman should rely solely on a man for their means of survival. Although I do believe women are constantly targeted at victims, one must also considered how often children are also targeted. Children are the epitome of weak and innocent, the complete opposite of a rapist. In most cases whenever a child is raped it is done by someone of authority in their life, whether it be a parent, teacher, coach, or even a mentor they look up to. These struggles alone show that rapist pray on the weak.
ReplyDeleteIn response to your comments I have changed my perspective towards rape. Although men are always put down in a women's persective, there are some very trustwothy and harmless men out there. The issue I am addressing targets the other side. Aside from men, and gender that has been reported or acted as a rapist is an individual who seeks power over another. I agree with the whole children aspect, great addition to this conversation. Alone with women, children are also veiwed as weak and over powered by domestic violence and rape. There is much more to talk about; however, for this particular post I was more concerned with the social class and race issue. The women assulted was an african american as well as lower class. The emphesis on weak is targeted in all aspects from gender, race, and social class.
